Kampala’s Mestil Hotel was abuzz from August 1-2, 2024, as it hosted the MTN Uganda 2024 ICT Expo, a two-day event themed “Accelerating Business Transformation with Digital Technology.” The expo was a significant platform for showcasing innovations and technological advancements that are revolutionizing business development across various sectors in Uganda and beyond.
The event brought together hundreds of innovators, entrepreneurs, engineers, and technology experts to discuss the latest trends in digital technology and explore how these innovations can enhance human life and drive business growth. Key topics included the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI), cloud solutions, unified communications, the Internet of Things (IoT), and digital services.
Revolutionizing Uganda’s Digital Landscape
MTN Uganda’s ICT Expo aimed to establish a clear technological roadmap for the country’s digital future. Building on the success of the inaugural MTN ICT Solutions Conference in 2023, this year’s expo, endorsed by the Ministry of ICT, solidified MTN Uganda’s position as a pioneer in technology solutions. The event focused on four key service areas: cloud solutions, unified communications, IoT, and digital services.
- Cloud Solutions: The expo highlighted MTN’s cloud-based platforms that enable businesses to store, manage, and process data efficiently, enhancing scalability and reducing IT costs.
- Unified Communications: MTN showcased its integrated communication tools, such as VoIP services and virtual meeting platforms, which are designed to improve collaboration and productivity within businesses. Technologies like the MTN Mobile Private Branch Exchange (PBX) and Webphone with Webex were also featured, offering advanced communication solutions.
- Internet of Things (IoT): The IoT segment focused on connecting devices and systems to the internet to facilitate smarter operations and automation. MTN’s smart agriculture solutions, connected home devices, and other smart technologies were key highlights.
- Digital Services: MTN’s digital services include a range of tools and platforms that enhance business operations and customer experiences, such as mobile money services, e-commerce platforms, and digital marketing solutions.
Leadership and Vision
Dr. Aminah Zawedde, Permanent Secretary of the Uganda Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, commended MTN Uganda for creating an engaging platform that supports young innovators and tech experts. “The government recognizes the private sector’s crucial role in the Digital Transformation Roadmap for Uganda, which aligns with our 2040 vision,” she stated, praising MTN’s leadership in driving digital transformation and supporting youth skilling.
MTN Uganda CEO Sylvia Mulinge emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and excellence in ICT. “MTN Uganda’s investment in network coverage, green data centers, and digital skills development aligns with our Ambition 2025 to lead digital solutions for Uganda and Africa at large,” she said.
Ibrahim Senyonga, General Manager of MTN’s Enterprise Business Unit (EBU), highlighted the importance of digital technologies in driving enterprise growth. He noted MTN’s partnerships with leading companies like Bayobab, Chenosis, and Microsoft, which enable MTN to offer a comprehensive range of enterprise solutions.
MTN’s Impact on Uganda’s Digital Transformation
MTN Uganda has been a pivotal player in the country’s digital transformation, with substantial investments in infrastructure, innovation, and partnerships. The company’s expansion of mobile and fiber network coverage has significantly enhanced internet accessibility, while its Mobile Money service has revolutionized financial inclusion, giving millions of Ugandans access to digital payments.
Additionally, MTN has supported national projects like the First National Digital Census and UCC RUCUSAF Projects, furthering Uganda’s digital agenda. The MTN ICT Expo 2024 not only showcased cutting-edge innovations but also underscored the profound impact of technology on businesses, the public sector, and the broader community.
The expo concluded with a clear message: the future of Uganda’s digital landscape is bright, with MTN Uganda at the forefront of driving transformative change across the nation.
