August 23, 2024
KAMPALA, Uganda | Xinhua | The Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) has officially announced a 10-member team set to represent the country at the 2024 World Athletics U20 Championship in Lima, Peru, scheduled from August 27-31. The team, led by UAF President Dominic Otuchet, is expected to compete against some of the world’s best young athletes.
Otuchet emphasized that the selection process was rigorous, with coaches carefully assessing the athletes’ training progress. “The coaches have assessed the athletes who have been training for some time and have come up with a strong team of 10. We would have liked to take more athletes, but we also have to consider our financial position,” Otuchet told Xinhua.
This year’s Championship will be highly competitive, featuring several Olympians from the recent Paris 2024 Games, including South Africa’s Bradley Nkoana and Bayanda Walaza, who won a silver medal in the men’s 4x100m relay, and Ethiopia’s Sembo Almayew, who placed fifth in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase.
With over 1,700 athletes from 134 countries competing at the Estadio Atletico de la Videna, the Ugandan team is determined to surpass their previous performance at the 2022 World Athletics U20 Championship in Colombia, where they finished 34th, highlighted by Prisca Chesang‘s bronze medal in the 5,000m final.
Uganda’s team will face formidable competition from top young athletes, including Ethiopia’s Medina Eisa (5,000m) and Jamaica’s Kerrica Hill (100m hurdles), both gold medalists at the 2022 World U20 Championships in Cali and returning to defend their titles.
