Police have reconstructed the scene where legendary Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu suffered the fatal injuries that claimed his life, with two key suspects taken back to the area as detectives continue their investigation.
The reconstruction involved 26-year-old Rose Tumusiime and her former partner, 41-year-old Vincent Arnold Nsamba, also known as Sitenda. Police said the exercise was intended to help investigators establish more evidence and piece together the events surrounding Matovu’s death.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Rachael Kawala confirmed the reconstruction, saying investigators were using the suspects’ accounts to better understand what happened.
“We have taken the suspects back to the scene to help us obtain more evidence as we continue with investigations into the murder.”
Kawala said the investigation was progressing as police worked to establish the full circumstances surrounding the death of the 77-year-old musician.
According to police and eyewitness accounts cited in the investigation, the events began in the early hours of the morning after Matovu had reportedly driven Tumusiime home from Rujumbura Bar and Agaba’s Bar in Kibuli.
Because the area is reached through narrow footpaths, Matovu reportedly parked his Range Rover near the roadside and walked with Tumusiime through an unlit alley to her single-room rental.
Investigators say Nsamba later arrived at the residence and demanded entry. When Tumusiime allegedly refused to open the door, he reportedly smashed the glass window panes with a hard object to see inside.
Neighbours reportedly heard Nsamba asking who was in the room, with Tumusiime responding that she was with her father figure.
Nsamba is said to have briefly left but remained near Matovu’s vehicle.
At dawn, Matovu and Tumusiime reportedly left the room and began walking toward the paved road when Nsamba allegedly confronted them.
According to eyewitness accounts, Nsamba allegedly assaulted Tumusiime. Matovu intervened and questioned why she was being beaten.
The confrontation then turned fatal. Nsamba allegedly struck Matovu below the chin, causing the veteran musician to collapse and bleed heavily, before the suspect fled the area.
Residents and a boda boda rider identified as Paul reportedly attempted to help Matovu before taking him to Kibuli Hospital.
Tumusiime followed them to the hospital and reportedly paid an initial treatment deposit of Shs18,000. Despite efforts by medical workers, Matovu could not be saved and was pronounced dead at around 7 a.m.
The police reconstruction is now another step in an investigation that is seeking to establish exactly what happened during the confrontation that ended the life of one of Uganda’s most celebrated veteran musicians.
