The Electoral Commission (EC) has convened a high-level meeting with representatives of all eight cleared presidential candidates to coordinate campaign schedules and ensure a smooth, conflict-free election period for 2026.

The session, chaired by EC Secretary Richard Kamugisha Baabo, included campaign agents such as Robert Centenary from the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) and Rovans Lwanyaga representing the National Unity Platform (NUP). The National Resistance Movement (NRM) and President Yoweri Museveni were represented by Moses Byaruhanga.

Police officials were also in attendance to provide guidance on security arrangements for campaign activities across the country.

Coordinating Campaign Schedules to Avoid Conflicts

According to sources, discussions focused on who will campaign where and when, a preventive measure aimed at avoiding overlaps and potential conflicts between candidates and their supporters.

The meeting comes after the EC confirmed the eight cleared presidential candidates on Wednesday, September 24, following a two-day nomination exercise that initially saw over 220 aspirants vying for the presidency.

The cleared candidates are:

  • Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (NRM) – Incumbent President
  • Nathan Nandala Mafabi (FDC)
  • Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (NUP)
  • Gregory Mugisha Muntu (Alliance for National Transformation)
  • Mubarak Munyagwa (Common Man’s Party)
  • Elton Joseph Mabirizi (Conservative Party)
  • Frank Kabinga Bulira (Revolutionary People’s Party)
  • Robert Kasibante (National Peasants Party)

Analysts have highlighted the absence of female candidates, continuing Uganda’s trend of male-dominated presidential contests.

EC spokesperson Julius Muchunguzi said the commission is now focused on designing and printing the official ballot papers, while ensuring that campaign activities are well-coordinated to maintain order nationwide.

Observers welcomed the session, calling it a routine but crucial step toward maintaining a regulated and conflict-free campaign environment. They emphasized that candidates must adhere to the agreed-upon schedules to promote a peaceful electoral process.
