The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has come out to deny claims that his iPhone 17 was stolen during the recent Masaza Cup final.

Rumors spread rapidly last weekend suggesting that pickpockets had snatched the Katikkiro’s expensive phone while he attended the thrilling final between Buweekula and Ssingo.

“On Saturday, the Kabaka was at the Masaza Cup final. Some people spread rumors claiming my phone had been stolen. They posted online that my very expensive phone was stolen. I received calls from those who have my contact, asking whether it was true,” Mayiga said.

Claims Called “Engineered Rumors”

Mayiga dismissed the stories as fabrications orchestrated by enemies of the Kingdom, aimed at diverting public attention from the Kabaka’s appearance at the event.

“The rumors were spread by those who wanted to divert attention from the Kabaka’s well-being. They had claimed that the Kabaka is bedridden, but he showed up and attended the match. So they wanted to divert us from that, and they came up with false rumors about my phone being stolen,” he added.

He also questioned the feasibility of the theft, given the tight security detail that always surrounds him.

Putting the Rumors to Rest

The Katikkiro’s statement comes as a strong rebuttal to the viral misinformation, reaffirming that both he and the Kabaka were safe and well during the Masaza Cup festivities.

The Masaza Cup, a prestigious cultural football tournament in Buganda, drew massive crowds, and the incident highlights how quickly rumors can spread online, especially involving high-profile figures.
