The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially dropped its list of parliamentary flagbearers for the 2026 general elections, sparking excitement, celebration, and heartbreak across Uganda’s entertainment and political scenes.

Unveiled by the party’s Election Management Committee, the lineup confirmed several entertainers-turned-politicians who successfully secured their flags, while others who had campaigned with vigor were left disappointed.

Celebrity Victories

Musician-turned-politician Geoffrey Lutaaya retained his stronghold in Kakuuto Constituency, continuing his tenure as a fan-favorite in both music and politics.

Comedian Muyonjo Hussein (Swengere) emerged victorious as NUP’s choice for Jinja North, delighting fans who have followed his journey from stage to political stage.

Singer-turned-legislator Hillary Kiyaga (Dr. Hilderman) successfully defended his seat in Mawokota North, signaling his ongoing commitment to public service. Meanwhile, Nina Kankunda (Nina Roz) celebrated her first-ever NUP ticket, taking the race for Sembabule Woman MP, a major milestone in her budding political career.

Veteran media personality Zambaali Bulasio Mukasa also claimed victory in Nansana Municipality, edging out musician Ibrahim Mayanja (Big Eye), who failed to secure the ticket.

In a political upset that surprised many, singer Mathias Walukagga defeated seasoned legislator Medard Lubega Sseggona to clinch the Busiro County East flag, proving that celebrity influence can translate into electoral success.

Another notable win went to Ivan Kyeyune, famously known as the voice behind NTV Uganda’s Zungulu, who secured the NUP ticket for Nakasongola County, further cementing the growing trend of media personalities entering politics.

Surprising Defeats

However, not all celebrity candidates were victorious. Former journalist Joyce Bagala Ntwatwa missed out on the Mityana Woman MP ticket, which went to Mukisa Proscovia. Similarly, media personality Mary Flavia Namulindwa was denied the flag for Gomba East, despite her strong grassroots campaigns.

Musician Lubega Obeid Reign, who had aspired to represent Rubaga South, and Tuff B, targeting Makindye East, were both denied party endorsement, leaving fans and supporters stunned.

Entertainment Meets Politics

This NUP lineup highlights a growing trend in Uganda: entertainers successfully leveraging their popularity to transition into politics. From musicians to comedians and media personalities, celebrities are increasingly becoming influential political actors, shaping discourse and capturing attention both on stage and in Parliament.

“The mix of victories and setbacks shows that celebrity status alone doesn’t guarantee political success. Grassroots support, strategy, and community engagement remain key,” political analysts noted.

For many fans, seeing their favorite entertainers stepping into political roles has been both inspiring and emotional. Social media erupted with reactions—some celebrating their wins, others expressing disappointment for the celebrities who lost.

  • Twitter: Fans trended hashtags like #NUP2026 and #CelebrityMPs.
  • Instagram: Posts and reels showcased victorious candidates, including Lutaaya and Walukagga.
  • Facebook: Supporters debated surprises and political upsets, particularly Mathias Walukagga’s win over a seasoned legislator.

Looking Ahead to the 2026 Elections

With the NUP flagbearers confirmed, attention now turns to the general elections in 2026, where Uganda’s voters will decide whether these entertainers-turned-politicians can translate their popularity into legislative influence.

While some candidates face uphill battles due to tough opponents, their presence underscores the blurring line between entertainment and politics in Uganda—a phenomenon that continues to redefine the country’s political landscape.

“These results show a new era where artists, comedians, and media figures are no longer just entertainers—they are serious contenders for political power,” analysts added.

Stay tuned for more updates on Uganda’s 2026 elections, NUP candidates, and the growing wave of celebrity politicians shaping the country’s future.
