Ugandan music lovers were buzzing with excitement when veteran entertainers Sam and Sophie Gombya announced their long-awaited “Power Couple Concert.” But months later, fans were left wondering — what really happened?

Now, Sam Gombya is finally breaking his silence, revealing the real reason behind the concert’s sudden cancellation — and it had nothing to do with creative differences or poor planning.

Venue Trouble at Serena Hotel Forced a Major Change of Plans

In a candid interview, Sam shared that their biggest challenge wasn’t logistics or finances, but rather a venue issue that was completely beyond their control.

“We tried booking the Serena Hotel venue, but by the time we went for booking, we were informed that Serena was under renovation,” Sam explained.

With Kampala Serena Hotel — one of Uganda’s most iconic performance venues — temporarily closed for upgrades, the Gombyas had no choice but to pause their plans.

“Then we decided to give it time and see what happens next year, and figure out if it will go well,” Sam added, hinting that the concert could still happen once the venue reopens.

The Show Might Be Delayed, But the Music Isn’t

Even with the concert off the calendar (for now), the beloved couple hasn’t slowed down creatively. Sam confirmed that he and his wife Sophie Gombya are still very much active in music — and in fact, they’ve already been dropping new songs on digital platforms.

“We have new music online, and that’s where we are promoting and pushing our work from since the world moved to digital platforms,” Sam said.

The move reflects a growing trend among Ugandan artists who are shifting from traditional concerts to online promotion, leveraging streaming platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube to reach global audiences.

The Gombyas: Uganda’s Original Music Power Couple

Sam and Sophie Gombya have long been regarded as Uganda’s golden couple of music, known for their undeniable chemistry both on and off stage.

Their timeless collaborations — often blending romance, storytelling, and soulful Afro-fusion — earned them a special place in the hearts of fans across generations. Tracks like “Sing For Me” and “Tukiggale” helped shape Uganda’s early 2000s sound, while their enduring love story became an inspiration to many.

For years, fans have been calling for a joint concert that celebrates both their musical journey and their marriage — making the cancellation of the Power Couple Concert all the more disappointing for loyal supporters.

Fans Still Hopeful for 2026 Concert Revival

Though the couple has not announced a new date yet, sources close to the Gombyas say the pair is keen on rescheduling once Serena Hotel completes its renovations.

The hotel, known for hosting high-end events and major performances, is undergoing a modernization phase to enhance its performance halls and hospitality spaces. If all goes well, 2026 could be the perfect year for the long-awaited Power Couple Concert comeback.

Industry insiders believe that with the right timing and promotion, the show could easily sell out — especially given the Gombyas’ loyal fan base and nostalgic appeal.

Digital Era, Same Passion

In the meantime, the couple is embracing the digital evolution of the music industry. Rather than waiting for live events to return, they’ve been leveraging streaming and social media to stay connected with fans.

They frequently share updates, behind-the-scenes clips, and snippets of new music on their official channels, encouraging followers to stream, share, and support Ugandan music.

This digital push not only keeps their artistry alive but also introduces their legacy to a new generation of online listeners.

Love, Legacy, and Longevity

For many Ugandans, Sam and Sophie Gombya represent more than just music — they embody partnership, perseverance, and purpose. Through decades of performing together, raising a family, and advocating for artists’ rights, the couple’s journey continues to inspire both fans and fellow musicians.

Even when projects like the Power Couple Concert hit a temporary pause, their love for music — and each other — never fades.

“We’re not done yet,” Sam hinted with a smile during his interview. “There’s more coming. The music is still alive.”

The Bottom Line: A Pause, Not an End

While the Power Couple Concert didn’t happen this year, Sam and Sophie Gombya’s story is far from over. The duo is still recording, still performing, and still proving that love and music can stand the test of time.

Fans can catch their latest releases across all major streaming platforms and keep an eye out for updates on the rescheduled concert date.
