Omaha was celebrating boxing champion Terence Crawford on Saturday, but the day ended in a tense standoff after the undefeated fighter was forced out of his car at gunpoint by police. The incident, caught on video, has prompted the city to order a thorough internal investigation.

Tense Traffic Stop Captured on Video

Footage circulating online shows Crawford calmly unbuckling his seatbelt, opening his door, and stepping out of the vehicle while an officer holds a flashlight in one hand and a gun in the other.

At one point, Crawford can be heard saying:

keeping his hands raised the entire time. He was then patted down by the officer before the video ends.

The Omaha Police Department confirmed the stop, stating it occurred shortly before 1:30 a.m. near North 12th and Capitol Avenue, after officers observed a vehicle driving recklessly in the downtown area. The stop took place at Cass Street, and the officer reportedly saw a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard.

“For safety, all four occupants were ordered out of the vehicle at gunpoint,” the statement read.

After verifying that everyone in the car was licensed to carry, the situation was resolved. A police supervisor and lieutenant also responded to the scene following Crawford’s request.

Omaha Mayor John Ewing addressed the incident, urging the community to focus on the triumphant parade celebrating Crawford’s upset win over Canelo Alvarez rather than the tense traffic stop. He promised that the internal investigation would be thorough and transparent, and emphasized that city officials are committed to ensuring every resident feels safe.

A Day of Highs and Lows for Crawford

Ironically, earlier Saturday, Crawford had been celebrated as a hero in Omaha following his stunning victory over Canelo Alvarez. The parade and festivities marked a career highlight for the undefeated 42-0 champion, who holds titles as the undisputed welterweight and super middleweight champion.

The dramatic traffic stop underscores the unexpected challenges Crawford faced that night, despite the city-wide celebration.
