Yung Mulo has weighed in on calls by some National Unity Platform (NUP)-leaning fans to boycott Vinka’s concert, arguing that the campaign reflected individual choices rather than an official position of the political party.
Vinka faced criticism from some NUP supporters after standing by her husband, Nelly Witta, during Uganda’s January 2026 general elections. Witta is associated with the National Resistance Movement (NRM), prompting some fans to call for a boycott of Vinka’s show at Lugogo Cricket Oval.
Despite the online backlash, Vinka proceeded with the concert and staged the event.
For Yung Mulo, however, there is an important distinction between individual supporters making political choices and an actual party position.
“It is someone’s choice to say they won’t support Vinka, but it’s not the party’s position because they didn’t come out to decampaign her,” he said.
The singer also made it clear that the controversy would not have stopped him from attending the concert. Yung Mulo said he would have gone to the show if he had been in Kampala, adding that he has never viewed Vinka as an artist who has taken an active political role.
“I know if I was in the city without much work, I was going to be at her show because I have never seen her stand for a political role,” he said.
Yung Mulo then used his own upcoming concert to illustrate why he believes political affiliations should not automatically determine which artists people support.
He pointed out that someone could potentially refuse to attend his show because he is associated with NUP, even though he has friends who support NRM.
“It’s like people refusing to come to my upcoming show because I’m NUP, yet I have many friends in NRM. That’s why I’m saying this isn’t about political parties, it’s fans choosing personal sides,” Yung Mulo said.
His comments highlight the intersection between Uganda’s political divisions and its entertainment industry, where artists can attract audiences with different political affiliations.
In Vinka’s case, the boycott calls did not prevent her from going ahead with her Lugogo Cricket Oval concert. For Yung Mulo, the bigger issue is ensuring that individual political choices are not automatically presented as official positions of the parties themselves.
