Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has said opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, will not be allowed to contest another election in Uganda.
Kainerugaba made the remarks in a post on X in which he referred to the National Unity Platform (NUP) leader as “Kabobi.”
“Kabobi will never be allowed to stand in another election in Uganda again,” Kainerugaba said.
He also accused Kyagulanyi of being a “foreign puppet,” citing his departure from Uganda after the January 2026 presidential election.
“He proved he is a foreign puppet when he run [sic] abroad 10 days after the last elections. We will never let that clown stand for anything in Uganda again. Never!” he added.
The remarks have drawn attention because they concern Kyagulanyi’s potential participation in future elections, including the next presidential election scheduled for 2031.
Bobi Wine Contested 2021 and 2026 Elections
Kyagulanyi has contested Uganda’s presidency twice, first in 2021 and again in 2026.
He was officially nominated by the Electoral Commission as a presidential candidate for the 2026 election. The Electoral Commission’s announced results put President Yoweri Museveni first, with Kyagulanyi finishing second.
Museveni was subsequently sworn in for another five-year term on May 12, 2026.
Kyagulanyi’s participation in any future election would be subject to the applicable electoral and legal requirements.
Statement Is Not an Electoral Ban
Kainerugaba’s comments constitute a political statement and do not, by themselves, establish a formal legal ban on Kyagulanyi’s candidacy.
The available reports do not indicate that the Electoral Commission has issued a decision barring Kyagulanyi from contesting future elections. The specific legal basis for Kainerugaba’s statement was also not provided in the reports.
The remarks come amid continued political exchanges between Kainerugaba and Kyagulanyi following the 2026 presidential election.
