Edward Mutebi has resigned from Gracious Kadondi’s Makerere University Guild administration after receiving a 20-day suspension, adding another twist to the controversy surrounding the university’s 2026 Freshers’ Ball featuring singer Fik Fameica.
But rather than challenge the disciplinary decision, Mutebi responded with a surprisingly cheerful resignation message, thanking the guild president for the opportunity to serve before announcing his departure.
In his response to the suspension letter, Mutebi wrote:
“Dear Madam President, Thank you (and yours) for the opportunity to serve. I resign with a bright smile.”
The brief statement effectively brought his time in Kadondi’s administration to an end, following a disciplinary decision that had initially placed his position under scrutiny.
The suspension was reportedly intended to allow investigations into Mutebi’s conduct and whether he had met the expected standards of a guild minister.
The controversy traces back to the Freshers’ Ball held at Impis Rugby Grounds, where chaotic scenes reportedly unfolded involving Guild President Gracious Kadondi and musician Fik Fameica.

According to reports surrounding the event, Kadondi was denied an opportunity to address students during the celebrations. Even more controversially, she was reportedly prevented from introducing the night’s headline performer, Fik Fameica, onto the stage.
That responsibility has traditionally been given to guild presidents at previous editions of the event, making the reported incident particularly significant within the university’s student leadership circles.
Before Mutebi’s suspension, reports had also emerged alleging that a member of Kadondi’s cabinet instructed the event’s emcees not to give the guild president an opportunity to speak.
However, the supplied information does not independently establish who issued the alleged instructions or confirm Mutebi’s specific role in the incident.
Kadondi subsequently moved to suspend Mutebi for 20 days while investigations into his conduct were conducted. His resignation, delivered in a message that appeared notably upbeat, has now shifted attention away from the disciplinary process and towards the future of the cabinet.
With Mutebi’s departure, questions remain about who will take over his responsibilities and whether the ongoing investigations will lead to any further administrative action.
For now, the Makerere Guild leadership controversy has produced an unexpected outcome: a 20-day suspension that ended with a resignation rather than a fight to retain the position.
