Makerere University has confirmed that the woman at the centre of the viral nudity incident during the 2026 Freshers’ Ball is a former student, as the institution moves to review security arrangements at its university-sanctioned social events.
The confirmation came from the university’s Dean of Students, Dr. Winifred Kabumbuli, who clarified that the woman attended the weekend event as a former student, alongside other members of the public who regularly participate in such celebrations.
The incident attracted widespread attention after videos circulated online showing a woman removing her clothes and dancing in front of a large crowd at the Freshers’ Ball.
The footage showed her continuing to dance on an elevated platform before she was eventually pulled down.
The incident quickly became a talking point online, with various claims emerging about the woman’s mental health. However, no verified information supplied by the university establishes that she has a mental health condition.
In her statement addressing the incident, Dr. Kabumbuli also highlighted an appeal from the woman’s family, asking members of the public to stop distributing the videos and photographs.
The university appears to be taking the matter seriously, particularly regarding the security and management of events held under its authority.
“We have initiated an immediate, comprehensive review of the security and event management protocols for university-sanctioned social events to prevent a recurrence of such breaches,” Dr. Kabumbuli stated.
She also acknowledged the family’s request for people to refrain from sharing the footage, describing the incident as unfortunate.
The development comes after the Freshers’ Ball attracted considerable attention for its musical performances, including appearances by Ugandan entertainers such as Winnie Nwagi and Fik Fameica.
However, the incident involving the former student has since become one of the most discussed developments surrounding this year’s celebration.
Beyond the viral footage, the university’s response now places attention on how security teams manage large public gatherings and prevent similar incidents at future events.
For now, Makerere is reviewing its event management procedures while the woman’s family is asking the public to respect its request for privacy.
The university’s message is also clear: the circulation of the footage should stop, even as questions surrounding the incident continue to attract public attention.
