A peaceful Sunday service in Grand Blanc, Michigan, turned into a nightmare when a gunman opened fire on worshippers at a local church, leaving at least two dead and multiple others injured. Law enforcement has identified the suspected shooter as Thomas Jacob Sanford, a 40-year-old resident of Burton, MI.

According to police, Sanford allegedly rammed his vehicle through the church’s front doors before firing on hundreds of people inside. Authorities say he also set fire to the building, although the motive for the attack remains under investigation.

Sanford was reportedly shot and killed by responding officers at the scene, ending the immediate threat but leaving a community in shock. Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye confirmed that while two deaths have been reported, the chaotic scene caused by the fire and gunfire means that the death toll could rise as authorities continue assessing the aftermath.

Dispatch Audio Reveals Chaos

Audio obtained from dispatchers shows the urgency of the response, with calls for massive amounts of water to fight the fire engulfing the church. First responders worked frantically as smoke filled the air, with many congregants trapped inside during the blaze.

Photographs from the scene capture the full emotional impact: plumes of smoke, distraught worshippers hugging one another, and the sheer devastation left behind by both the fire and the shooting.

Community Grapples With Horror

The attack has left the Grand Blanc community reeling. Neighbors and local leaders expressed grief over the violence in what is normally a sanctuary for faith and fellowship. Authorities continue to interview survivors and investigate the sequence of events, hoping to piece together Sanford’s motive and how the tragedy unfolded.

Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement emphasized that the investigation is ongoing. Police are canvassing the area, reviewing surveillance footage, and speaking with witnesses to determine how the suspect gained access and why he targeted the church. The motive remains unclear, and authorities urge anyone with information to come forward.

Call for Support and Safety

In the wake of the tragedy, community leaders are urging people to stay vigilant and support one another. Mental health resources have been made available to survivors and their families, and local authorities continue coordinating emergency response efforts.

This tragic event underscores the vulnerability of public spaces, even those devoted to worship and community. Officials have pledged a full investigation and are working to prevent further incidents.
