Kampala, Uganda — National Unity Platform (NUP) flag bearer for Busiro East, Mathias Walukagga, has announced plans to pursue a Master’s Degree following his graduation from a Bachelor’s in Public Administration and Management at St. Lawrence University.
The musician-turned-politician made the revelation during a weekend public rally, framing the move as a direct response to persistent criticism questioning his educational qualifications and readiness for high office.
“We want to silence those who say we did not go to school,” Walukagga asserted.
Inspired by Fellow Artists
Walukagga credited fellow musician and politician Geofferey Lutaaya as a key inspiration for both his political journey and his educational pursuits.
“There was so much said about him not being educated, but one time I saw him on TV speaking perfect English. I reached out to him and he advised me to get further education,” he explained.

Emphasis on Public Administration
The NUP candidate emphasized that a strong foundation in public administration is essential for effective service delivery in parliament, arguing it may be more valuable than a law degree in addressing constituents’ needs.
“A background in public administration is crucial for a Member of Parliament as it focuses on service delivery,” he said.
Facing the Shadow of Educational Criticism
Walukagga’s ambitions have repeatedly drawn scrutiny from veteran politicians and journalists who question whether artists possess sufficient formal qualifications for legislative roles.
Critics like Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda have highlighted the importance of academic training to ensure lawmakers can effectively scrutinize government policies and operations.
By pursuing further education, Walukagga aims to dispel doubts and strengthen his credibility ahead of the 2026 general elections, positioning himself as a serious contender against seasoned opponents such as Medard Lubega Sseggona.
