Ugandan music superstar Eddy Kenzo is addressing the storm head-on.

The singer and Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) President has responded to a leaked audio clip that had fans and industry insiders buzzing. In the recording, Kenzo was heard expressing frustration over his role at UNMF and even hinted at stepping down — sparking widespread speculation about a potential leadership shake-up in Uganda’s music scene.

The Leaked Audio That Shook the Music Industry

In the clip, Kenzo candidly discussed growing tensions between the UNMF and the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development. The dispute centers on the delayed release of the remaining Shs 5 billion SACCO stimulus package meant to support struggling Ugandan artists.

“We can’t afford to clash with the Ministry. They are the bigger body. If things continue this way, I might have no choice but to resign,” Kenzo was heard saying.

The remarks quickly went viral, with fans and critics speculating that the legendary singer might actually step down from his position at UNMF.

Kenzo Clarifies: “This Was Not Me Talking to the Public”

On Monday, while speaking to the media in Adjumani, Kenzo stressed that his words in the leaked audio were part of an internal UNMF discussion, not a public statement.

“I am here to work, I’m here to deliver. I didn’t come here to play or solve a problem halfway. I am doing my best. If I see someone taking me on a pace I can’t handle, I’d rather leave,” he explained.

Kenzo expressed concern that some individuals had twisted his words, attempting to undermine UNMF’s ongoing efforts to serve Uganda’s creative industry.

Emphasizing Unity Within UNMF

The singer-turned-leader highlighted the importance of each organization respecting its mandate without interfering in the other’s operations. For Kenzo, maintaining unity within the Federation remains a top priority.

“The Federation has to do its work, and others also have to do theirs. But if they create situations that dismantle our unity, then I’ll have no option but to resign,” he said.

This statement clarified that his mention of resignation was conditional — tied to extreme disorganization or disruption, not a reaction to daily challenges.

Members Urge Patience, Kenzo Stays

Following the controversy, Kenzo held an online meeting with UNMF members, who advised him to hold off on any resignation plans while internal issues were being addressed.

“I had an online meeting with the members and they told me to first wait and sort some things. I also received calls from officials who advised me to be patient. So, we are good now, I’m still here, and we’re going to work,” he confirmed.

The reassurance from his team signals that Kenzo’s leadership remains intact, and the Federation continues to work toward resolving the SACCO stimulus delay for artists.

Why This Matters for Ugandan Artists

The saga underscores the challenges facing Uganda’s creative sector, including delayed funding, bureaucratic hurdles, and the delicate balance of leadership within national organizations. As UNMF President, Kenzo plays a pivotal role in protecting artists’ interests while maintaining productive relations with government ministries.

Fans have flooded social media with support for Kenzo, praising his transparency and commitment to keeping the Federation united amid controversy.

What’s Next for Eddy Kenzo and UNMF?

With Kenzo reaffirming his position, UNMF members and the public are watching closely to see how the Federation navigates these ongoing challenges. The focus now is on:

  • Ensuring the SACCO stimulus funds reach artists promptly
  • Strengthening internal communication and unity within UNMF
  • Maintaining healthy collaboration with the Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development

Kenzo’s leadership and the Federation’s decisions in the coming months will likely shape the future of Uganda’s music industry, affecting thousands of artists relying on support programs.

“I am here to serve, not to be distracted by politics. Our unity and our work are what matter most,” Kenzo emphasized.
