Businessman and city socialite Christian Asiimwe, popularly known as Don Chris, has been remanded to Luzira Prison after 127 charges of obtaining money and goods by false pretence were read against him in court.
Asiimwe, 32, appeared before the City Hall Magistrates Court on Wednesday afternoon, where Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Nicholas Aisu read the charges stemming from allegations that he took money from job seekers while promising to help them secure employment opportunities abroad.
The court ordered Asiimwe to remain in custody until September 21, 2026, as investigations into the allegations continue.
The case centers on claims involving overseas job recruitment, with Asiimwe accused of obtaining money from individuals who were seeking employment opportunities outside Uganda.
The number of people who have reportedly come forward in the investigation is significantly higher than the charges currently before court. Police have recorded statements from 655 alleged victims, who claim they lost more than Shs2 billion in connection with the alleged job scam linked to Asiimwe and Skypins Tours.
However, the 127 charges read in court represent the individual complaints that have so far been formally brought before the magistrates court.
For now, Asiimwe remains on remand at Luzira Prison while police investigations continue. The allegations against him have not been proven in court.
As the case moves forward, the September 21 court date is expected to mark the next stage in proceedings against the businessman, with the wider investigation involving hundreds of people who have reported alleged losses.
Asiimwe is presumed innocent unless and until he is convicted by a court of law.
