Singer King Saha has criticized the Ugandan government over security concerns following the death of legendary Afrigo Band musician Moses Matovu.
Matovu died on Thursday, September 24, after an attack in the Kibuli area of Kampala. Police have opened a murder investigation, with authorities yet to publicly establish the motive or identify those responsible.
Saha addressed Matovu’s death in a video shared on TikTok, arguing that Ugandans are increasingly vulnerable to criminal gangs and calling for stronger government action.
The singer claimed that some gangs have been “empowered by the government,” a serious allegation that he did not substantiate in the remarks.
“We have spent quite a while speaking against such gangs of youths that are sometimes empowered by the government,” Saha said. “These gangs are very brave and cause havoc at any time of their choosing.”
He also criticized what he described as inadequate street lighting, arguing that darker streets create conditions that make nighttime crime easier.
“It is very tragic, but the government isn’t protecting us well. Everyone is on his own; too much darkness,” Saha said.
The singer said he and others had previously called for more street lights as part of efforts to improve security.
“We have requested more street lights just to have enough light at night,” he added.
Saha’s comments came as musicians and fans continued mourning Matovu, one of Uganda’s most enduring musicians and the longtime leader of Afrigo Band.
Police have said they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the veteran musician’s death. Any claims about the attackers, their motives or possible links to organized groups remain subject to the ongoing investigation.
The tragedy has renewed public attention on nighttime security and the safety of residents in Kampala, while Saha is calling for authorities to do more to protect citizens.
