Legendary Afrigo Band singer Moses Matovu is scheduled to be laid to rest today, Friday, September 25, at 4PM in Kyanja, following a family and clan meeting that settled on the burial arrangements.
Ssalongo Kamoga Mwavu Takwana announced the arrangements after the meeting, clarifying earlier reports that had indicated the celebrated musician would be buried on Thursday, September 24.
“After the clan meeting, we’ve agreed that the late Moses Matovu will be laid to rest tomorrow (Friday) at 4PM in Kyanja,” Ssalongo Kamoga said in the announcement made Thursday. “There were announcements earlier indicating that he was to be laid to rest today, but as the clan, we’ve clarified that.”
With Friday now here, the agreed burial time is 4PM in Kyanja.
The family is also considering a public viewing at the National Theatre to give Matovu’s fans, fellow musicians and members of the public an opportunity to pay their final respects.
Ssalongo Kamoga noted that Matovu was Muslim but said the family, together with the Afrigo Band fraternity and other artists, was discussing arrangements that would accommodate public mourning.
“We know very well that he was a Muslim, but certain norms change in religion and tribes,” he said. “We’ve agreed with the Afrigo family and other artists that we take his body to the National Theatre for public viewing, but we will inform you either today or tomorrow.”
He also clarified that once Matovu’s body is taken to Kyanja, it will not be returned to Kampala.
The funeral arrangements come as police continue investigating the circumstances surrounding Matovu’s death. Police have confirmed that a female suspect is in custody, while another male suspect is reportedly still at large.
According to preliminary information cited by police, the male suspect was allegedly working with a private security company. Police said further details would be provided if and when he is apprehended.
Matovu, one of Uganda’s most celebrated musicians and a longtime member of Afrigo Band, was allegedly attacked by unknown assailants in the early hours of Thursday, September 24, in Market Zone B, Kibuli, Makindye Division, Kampala.
He was taken to Kibuli Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
For now, the family’s announced plan is for Matovu to be laid to rest today at 4PM in Kyanja, with any additional public viewing arrangements expected to be communicated by the family.
