Police have detained a woman who was with legendary Afrigo Band singer Moses Matovu shortly before his death in Kibuli as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal incident.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala said the woman is in custody and assisting investigators as police pursue a male suspect who allegedly confronted Matovu early Thursday morning.
According to police, Matovu went to his girlfriend’s residence in Kibuli at around 5:30 a.m. on September 24, 2026. Preliminary information indicates that as Matovu and the woman were leaving the residence, they were confronted by a man who police say had previously been in a relationship with the same woman.
Police say the confrontation escalated into a physical altercation. Matovu sustained serious injuries and was taken to Kibuli Hospital by a boda boda rider, where he later died.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation have not yet been fully established. Police said investigators are still verifying different accounts of what happened before Matovu sustained the injuries that led to his death.
The male suspect has been identified but reportedly fled the scene. According to Kawala, detectives are actively pursuing him as they work to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
The woman who was with Matovu has been detained to assist with the investigation. Her detention, however, does not by itself establish her involvement in Matovu’s death.
The death of Matovu, a longtime member of Afrigo Band, has also triggered tributes from figures across Uganda’s entertainment and public circles.
Police have urged members of the public to remain calm and allow investigators to conduct their work. Authorities said further updates would be provided as more information becomes available.
For now, the investigation remains focused on establishing exactly what happened during the early-morning confrontation in Kibuli and locating the male suspect.
