Police in Buyende District have arrested a supervisor with Securex Private Security Company after a video showing a security guard being assaulted over alleged theft circulated on social media.
The suspect was identified as Joseph Warom, a Securex supervisor accused of assaulting fellow security guard Ayub Mbadi, who was deployed at Kidera Sugar Works in Buyende.
According to Busoga North Police, preliminary investigations indicate that Warom apprehended Mbadi after accusing him of stealing scrap materials from the sugar factory.
A video circulated on social media shows a man lying on the ground while another person repeatedly strikes him with a cane. A second individual is also seen standing nearby.
The footage prompted public concern and led police to open an investigation into the incident.
Police Arrest Suspect
Police said they arrested Warom after becoming aware of the video.
In a statement, Busoga North Police said one suspect had been taken into custody in connection with the assault.
Warom remains in police custody as investigations continue. Police said he is expected to face an assault charge.
Investigators are also working to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and the involvement of the other person seen in the footage.
Police have not indicated whether Mbadi was formally charged over the alleged theft of scrap materials.
Police Warn Against Taking the Law Into Their Own Hands
Authorities condemned the use of violence against people accused of wrongdoing and urged members of the public to use lawful procedures when dealing with suspected offences.
Police said allegations of wrongdoing should be handled through the appropriate legal channels rather than through physical punishment.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Warom have not been tested in court.
