In a groundbreaking move set to redefine Uganda’s transport and clean energy landscape, Zembo Uganda, the nation’s first electric motorcycle company, has announced a powerful new partnership with Tugende Limited, a leading social enterprise known for empowering entrepreneurs through asset financing and tech-driven support.
This alliance aims to revolutionize urban and peri-urban mobility by giving thousands of boda boda riders access to affordable, zero-emission electric bikes, marking a major milestone in Uganda’s journey toward sustainable, cost-efficient transportation.
A Partnership That Powers Progress
Zembo’s CEO James Obarowski called the partnership a “pivotal” step forward for both companies and the riders who form the backbone of Uganda’s informal economy.
“We have witnessed the dedication and daily hustle of the boda community, and they deserve tools that deliver real returns,” Obarowski said.
“With Tugende, we’re helping riders save up to 40% on operating costs while boosting their take-home earnings. This is how we help them ride smarter and earn bigger.”
Through the deal, Tugende becomes Zembo’s official electric motorcycle partner—offering flexible financing and value-added services designed to make the transition to e-mobility easier than ever.
Riders will now enjoy low upfront costs, quick loan approvals, and full access to Zembo’s battery-swap network, ensuring they spend more time on the road and less money at the pump.

Beyond Fuel: A Smarter, Greener Vision
This isn’t just about replacing fuel with batteries. The partnership represents a joint commitment to economic empowerment and environmental stewardship.
By financing Zembo’s electric bikes, Tugende helps tackle two of the biggest challenges boda boda riders face:
- Rising fuel costs that eat into profits
- Pollution that affects community health
The collaboration directly supports Uganda’s national clean transport goals, while helping everyday riders build sustainable incomes for their families.
“Electric Mobility Is the Future Our Riders Need”
Patrick Asiimwe, Tugende’s Country Manager in Uganda, emphasized the company’s excitement about leading this new era of e-mobility.
“Electric mobility is not a trend; it’s the future our riders need,” Asiimwe said.
“We’ve financed entrepreneurial dreams for over a decade, and we’re proud to now offer access to proven, pioneering electric bikes with Zembo.”
Tugende’s CEO, Michael Wilkerson, added that the partnership delivers both economic and environmental wins for Ugandan communities.
“Teaming with Zembo allows us to offer sensible packages—low upfront costs, quick approvals, and reliable bikes,” Wilkerson explained. “It’s a clear win for riders’ finances, air quality, and the communities we serve.”
Nationwide Rollout Starts Now
The deployment begins immediately in Uganda’s key economic centers—Kampala, Masaka, Jinja, and Entebbe—with an ambitious plan for nationwide expansion by mid-2026.
Early adopters are already showing enthusiasm for the combination of Tugende’s accessible financing and Zembo’s innovative charging network, which includes Africa’s first locally assembled battery cabinets.
This initiative will not only cut riders’ daily expenses but also strengthen Uganda’s position as a regional leader in sustainable mobility.

Two Pioneers Driving Change
Zembo Uganda, founded in 2018, has already rolled out more than 1,000 electric motorcycles and built a reliable network of battery-swap stations. The company’s commitment to cleaner transport has reduced emissions and boosted rider income—making it one of East Africa’s standout clean-tech innovators.
Meanwhile, Tugende, established in 2012, has supported over 80,000 entrepreneurs across Uganda and Kenya through technology-driven asset financing, offering products such as the first medical cover for boda riders in Uganda.
By integrating Zembo’s e-bikes into its financing model, Tugende continues its mission to provide tools that uplift communities and create long-term financial stability.
Cleaner Air, Bigger Paychecks
This partnership creates a triple win—for the riders, the environment, and the economy.
- Riders gain higher profits and reliable financing.
- Cities enjoy cleaner air and less noise pollution.
- The nation moves closer to its green energy transition goals.
As Uganda’s roads start buzzing with more quiet, electric-powered boda bodas, both companies say this is just the beginning of a long-term push toward sustainable transport solutions across Africa.
