Grace Nakimera is set to give fans an unexpected musical throwback at her upcoming concert, revealing that she plans to perform some of her old secular songs despite spending years being associated with gospel music.
The Ugandan singer made the revelation during a press conference, where she explained that she no longer sees herself as confined to a single musical lane.
Nakimera previously moved away from secular music and became strongly associated with gospel, leading many fans to expect her upcoming show to focus largely on her faith-based catalogue. But she now says the concert will feature both gospel and love songs.
“I changed my mind, and I will begin singing gospel and love songs because I figured out that if I sing a love song, it won’t take away God from me, and even the Born Agains fall in love too.”
Her explanation suggests that Nakimera is approaching her music based on how she feels rather than sticking rigidly to one category.
“I change at any time depending on what is going on. I can tell you this, then I do something different depending on the feeling that I get. For now, I’m singing my music.”
That unpredictability could make the upcoming concert particularly interesting for longtime fans who remember Nakimera’s earlier secular material.
But the singer’s press conference was not only about music. Nakimera also offered a glimpse into her private life, revealing that she is a mother of twins and holds the “Nnalongo” title.
She remains protective of the identity of the man in her life, however, saying she has deliberately chosen not to put her lover in the public spotlight.
Nakimera explained that bringing loved ones into celebrity life can expose them to unnecessary scrutiny, particularly online. She said she is especially unwilling to expose her children to insults and attacks on the internet.
“The problem with bringing out our loved ones from the gallery is that they can become a problem to you. But that’s not important yet to us. I’ve children and I hold the ‘Nnalongo’ title, and people have a habit of insulting children on the internet, which I don’t like.”
For Nakimera, criticism directed at her is something she can handle. Her children, she made clear, are a different matter.
“To me, a person can insult me however much they want, but shouldn’t involve my kids. And I’ve my reasons why I don’t show out my lover.”
So while Nakimera is opening the door to her old secular catalogue onstage, she is keeping another part of her life firmly behind the curtain.
