SP Michael Kananura has responded to concerns over alleged selective enforcement during Operation Tekeleza Sheria, saying the ongoing traffic operation is not targeting specific individuals but is focused on vehicles found violating the law.
The Uganda Police spokesperson addressed questions raised after public debate over why some high-profile personalities’ vehicles had not been intercepted despite claims that they may have traffic violations involving illegal sirens, lights, or number plates.
According to Kananura, enforcement officers do not go searching for vehicles at people’s homes. Instead, motorists are dealt with when they encounter Police and Military Police teams on roads or at designated enforcement points.
“We have taken note of concerns regarding alleged selective enforcement in the ongoing Operation Tekeleza Sheria, particularly involving illegal sirens and lights, concealed or missing number plates,” Kananura said.
He explained that the operation is a joint initiative involving the Uganda Police Force and the UPDF Military Police Brigade, targeting specific traffic offences.
Kananura added that a vehicle not yet intercepted during the operation should not be interpreted as receiving special treatment.
“Vehicles are intercepted when found on the road and within enforcement points,” he said, adding that any vehicle found committing a targeted violation would be handled according to the law.
The remarks come after an X user questioned why vehicles linked to celebrities including Eddy Kenzo and Bebe Cool had not been affected by the enforcement exercise.
Kananura maintained that the operation is based on observed violations rather than the identity or public profile of vehicle owners.
“Those who continue violating the law should not assume they will evade enforcement indefinitely,” he said.
Operation Tekeleza Sheria is aimed at addressing traffic violations including the use of illegal sirens and lights, as well as concealed or missing number plates.
The police spokesperson urged motorists to comply with traffic requirements, saying the objective of the operation is to improve road discipline and ensure enforcement applies across all categories of road users.
As the operation continues, public attention remains focused on how enforcement teams handle vehicles belonging to both ordinary motorists and prominent figures.
