Ugandan media personality Evelyn Mic has defended her comments about singer Irene Ntale’s fertility struggles after facing social media backlash, insisting that her message was intended as a warning about online cruelty rather than an attempt to ridicule the singer.
The controversy followed Ntale’s public account of the ridicule she has experienced while dealing with fertility challenges. During one of her shows, Evelyn addressed the singer’s experience, advising her to be cautious about sharing such deeply personal struggles with the internet because doing so could expose her to further trolling.
However, some social media users criticised Evelyn’s remarks, interpreting them as insensitive toward a woman who had opened up about a difficult personal experience.

In a subsequent statement shared on social media, Evelyn said she sympathised with Ntale and others facing similar challenges. She explained that her concern was about how online audiences can misuse vulnerable moments, turning personal pain into material for jokes and viral content.
“My point was simple: sometimes, sharing your most vulnerable moments with the internet exposes you to people who have no intention of understanding you,” Evelyn said.
She argued that emotional videos and personal disclosures can be taken out of context, transformed into memes or circulated in messaging groups without regard for the person involved.
The media personality also acknowledged that her delivery may have sounded more forceful than intended, but maintained that her underlying message was not insensitive.
“I said what I said out of concern, not cruelty,” she stated, adding that people were free to disagree with her perspective but should respond to what she actually said rather than an interpretation they had created.
Evelyn also criticised what she described as the tendency of some internet users to pursue engagement and viral attention at the expense of other people’s experiences.
Her response therefore centred on a distinction she wanted the public to understand: sympathising with someone going through fertility challenges, she argued, does not necessarily mean encouraging them to share every detail of their experience publicly.

At the same time, the controversy highlights the sensitivity surrounding public discussions of fertility. For people who choose to speak openly about such experiences, sharing their stories can be a way to express themselves, seek understanding or raise awareness. However, public disclosure can also expose them to unwanted scrutiny and hurtful commentary.
Evelyn’s position is that Ntale deserved compassion but should remain mindful of how online audiences might treat her vulnerability. Her critics, meanwhile, objected to how that advice was delivered.
The media personality has now clarified her intentions, but the disagreement underscores a wider question facing public figures: how to speak honestly about personal struggles while navigating an online environment where empathy and ridicule can exist side by side.
