Veteran Ugandan singer David Lutalo has revealed how he has managed to stay relevant in the music industry for over a decade, producing timeless hits that continue to resonate with fans.

Lutalo attributes his success and staying power to never getting too comfortable and constantly striving to grow as an artist.

“When you see me disappear from the public eye, it’s intentional. It’s to create demand. I’m never in my comfort zone,” he explained.

Music for the Future, Not Just Hits

The singer emphasized that his focus is always on creating music that stands the test of time, rather than simply chasing short-lived trends.

“I sing for the future. Even if you don’t understand the song now, someone in 10 years can pick interest and love it. I care about the song being nice, not just about making a hit,” Lutalo said.

This philosophy has allowed him to produce songs that gain recognition gradually, showing that true artistry often transcends immediate popularity.

Adapting to a Changing Industry

Lutalo also highlighted how the music industry has evolved, noting the shift from earning primarily through live performances to generating revenue from digital platforms.

“The competition is stiff, and things are changing. We’re moving from earning much from stage performances to making money from digital platforms. So, if you want to earn long-term, that’s where the focus should be,” he stated.

Lessons for Upcoming Artists

David Lutalo’s journey serves as a masterclass in longevity for emerging musicians. By prioritizing quality, innovation, and digital growth, artists can remain relevant even in a rapidly changing industry.

“It’s not about instant fame. It’s about creating music that people will love years from now,” he advised.
