Media personality and event organizer Douglas Lwanga has opened up about a painful childhood experience that shaped one of the biggest personal decisions of his life—choosing never to drink alcohol.
Speaking during a conversation with MC Kats on the MC Kats UG Talks podcast, the NBS TV presenter revealed that his decision was influenced by what he witnessed while growing up, particularly his father’s struggles with alcohol and the impact it had on his family.
Lwanga said his father was an alcoholic and that his drinking often resulted in domestic violence at home, including incidents where his mother was beaten.
According to the presenter, those childhood memories left a lasting emotional impact and became the reason he chose to stay away from alcohol completely.
He recalled that, as a child, he was sometimes sent to buy crude alcohol for his father. After consuming it, he said his father would become violent toward his mother.
“Not taking alcohol was based on my dad. When I was young, my dad used to send me to buy him crude alcohol. Every time he would consume it and get high, he would beat up my Mum, domestic violence.”
Lwanga described the painful memories of seeing his mother suffer, saying one particular image has remained with him throughout his life.
“My mum would carry me on her back, crying, and take me to my grandmother’s place.”
The media personality said those experiences created deep childhood trauma and influenced how he views alcohol today.

For him, alcohol became associated with fear and harm rather than enjoyment.
“There is a lot of childhood trauma around that. So I made my decision never to touch that bottle because that image has never left my mind. Each time I see alcohol, I see danger.”
Lwanga explained that his choice was not based on a temporary decision but on a personal commitment formed from his early experiences.
He said he does not want to repeat the same patterns he witnessed while growing up and believes avoiding alcohol helps him maintain the values he has chosen for himself.
