Uganda is in mourning following a devastating road accident involving pupils and staff from King David Junior School, a primary school located in Ndejje, near Kampala.
On the evening of Thursday, July 16, 2026, a school bus carrying pupils and teachers home from an educational study tour to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District was involved in a fatal crash while descending Chekwatit Hill in eastern Uganda.
According to preliminary reports, the bus is believed to have suffered a mechanical failure, causing the driver to lose control before the vehicle struck a roadside boulder and overturned.
The tragedy has claimed 24 lives, including 23 children and one adult. Among those who died was Mr. Tadeo Ssekade, the founder and director of King David Junior School. Several other pupils and staff sustained injuries and were taken to nearby health facilities for treatment.
The accident has sent shockwaves across Uganda, with parents, educators, religious leaders, and government officials expressing profound grief over the loss of so many young lives.
Government Response
Following the tragedy, Uganda’s Ministry of Education and Sports announced the immediate suspension of all school educational trips and excursions nationwide. The ministry said the measure is intended to allow comprehensive safety investigations and the development of stricter transport and excursion safety guidelines aimed at preventing similar tragedies.
Investigations into the cause of the crash remain ongoing, with authorities expected to determine whether mechanical failure, road conditions, or other factors contributed to the accident.

The school released a memorial honoring Ms. Abigail, a teacher, and twenty pupils whose lives were lost. The tribute described the children as “Little Angels” and offered prayers for strength and comfort to the grieving families.

The memorial concluded with the scripture from 2 Corinthians 1:3–4, reminding mourners of God’s comfort during times of sorrow, and carried the message:
