Dokta Brain has revealed some of the Ugandan songwriters whose work has caught his attention, highlighting artists he admires for their lyrics and ability to communicate messages through music.
The singer and songwriter, who has written songs for several Ugandan musicians, was asked to name the writers he rates highly in the country’s music scene.
His list included Fyno UG, Nikoly Ten, Shena Skies, A Pass, Great Roni, Lyrical Tazi and Azawi. Dokta Brain was quick to clarify, however, that the names were not ranked according to who he considers the best.
“Fyno UG, Nikoly Ten, Shena Skies… they aren’t in order of who’s my best but the list goes on,” he said.
He went on to praise A Pass and Great Roni, particularly pointing to the quality of their lyrics.
“A Pass, Great Roni – he’s writing very nice music, I listen to the lyrics and say wow,” Dokta Brain added.
Azawi and Lyrical Tazi also made the cut, further underscoring the range of songwriting styles that have impressed him.
But Dokta Brain’s praise was not limited to established names. He also singled out Pawaboy, focusing on the young songwriter’s ability to deliver a clear message through his music.
“Pawaboy, for his age, he writes so well and executes the message, that’s what makes him different,” Dokta Brain said.
His comments offer a glimpse into what the songwriter himself pays attention to when listening to music: not just the finished sound, but the writing, lyrics and effectiveness of the message.
With several names receiving recognition, Dokta Brain’s list also makes clear that he was sharing personal favorites rather than presenting an official ranking of Uganda’s best songwriters.
