UCC Boss Nyombi Thembo Praises John Blaq’s Unique Voice, Calls for Originality
Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Nyombi Thembo has singled out singer John Blaq as one of Uganda’s most distinctive musical talents, praising the artist’s unique voice and revealing that he hopes to meet him to explore ways of supporting his career.
Speaking in a recent interview, Nyombi said John Blaq possesses a vocal quality that immediately stands out, describing it as one of the rare attributes that has caught his attention.
Beyond highlighting the singer’s talent, the UCC boss also delivered a broader message to Uganda’s music industry, urging artists to focus on building authentic personal brands instead of chasing every emerging trend.
Nyombi Thembo Impressed by John Blaq’s Voice
Nyombi did not hide his admiration for the singer’s vocal ability.
According to him, John Blaq’s deep and powerful voice is one of the qualities that separates him from many of his contemporaries in Uganda’s music scene.
“He has a unique voice and I want to meet him and see what we can do for him. His voice is something else.”
While Nyombi did not specify what kind of support he hopes to discuss with the artist, his comments signal a desire to engage with one of the country’s rising talents.
For John Blaq, the recognition is another endorsement of the vocal style that has helped him build a loyal fan base over the years.

A Message to Uganda’s Young Artists
Using John Blaq as an example, Nyombi encouraged musicians to invest in developing their own identities rather than copying what is currently popular.
He argued that artists who leave lasting legacies are often those who establish recognizable brands built around originality.
According to Nyombi, following trends may generate temporary attention, but uniqueness is what helps artists remain relevant over time.
His advice comes as Uganda’s music industry continues to evolve, with social media trends increasingly influencing the type of music and content artists produce.
Lessons From Music Legends
To reinforce his point, Nyombi pointed to artists whose originality defined their careers.
He said the late Jimmy Katumba stood out because he introduced a musical style that differed from those of the veterans who came before him.
Nyombi also referenced global pop icon Michael Jackson, noting that the singer became instantly recognizable because of his signature dance moves and distinctive fashion.
“Get your brand and know how to brand yourself, but unfortunately these young artists want to go with trends.”
He continued:
“Michael Jackson came with his dancing style of backsliding and a unique fashion style.”
For Nyombi, these examples demonstrate that memorable artists are often remembered not only for their music but also for the identities they create around their work.

Why His Remarks Matter
Nyombi’s comments come at a time when many musicians rely heavily on viral social media trends to promote new releases.
While online challenges and short-form videos can help songs reach wider audiences, there is an ongoing conversation within Uganda’s entertainment industry about the importance of long-term artistic identity.
His remarks echo a growing belief that sustainable careers are built through originality, consistency, and authenticity rather than temporary online attention.
By highlighting John Blaq as an example of a unique talent, Nyombi emphasized that distinctive qualities can become an artist’s greatest strength.
Every successful musician has something that audiences instantly recognize, whether it’s a voice, performance style, or personality.
For Nyombi Thembo, John Blaq’s voice is that defining quality.
His comments serve as both praise for one artist and advice for an entire generation of musicians navigating an increasingly competitive industry.
As Uganda’s music scene continues to grow, Nyombi believes the artists who create lasting legacies will be those who dare to be different rather than simply follow the latest trend.
