KAYUNGA — At least seven people were injured in a road crash involving motorcycles and vehicles escorting National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) on Saturday morning.

The accident happened around 11:30 a.m. in Namyoya Village along the Nakifuma–Kayunga road, as Bobi Wine’s convoy made its way from Kalagi toward Kayunga during a campaign trail.

How the Crash Happened

According to police, the chaos started when an unidentified motorcycle collided with another vehicle at high speed, sparking a chain reaction of collisions. Several motorcycles went down, and a white Mitsubishi Rosa minibus (UAZ 064H) — plastered with Bobi Wine’s campaign posters — rammed into the wreckage.

The impact left multiple supporters injured, some with serious wounds, before emergency responders rushed in.

The Injured Supporters

Police identified the victims as:

  • Kewanza Bashir (27)
  • Kakaire Bashir (35)
  • Ssepereza Musa (40)
  • Kisomba Micheal (28)
  • Ssewaya Eric (23)
  • Mutagubya Robert (24)

They were immediately transported to St. Francis Naggalama Hospital for treatment.

Other motorcycles involved in the crash — identified as UFQ 569H, UGH 892B, UEK 351T, and UFQ 250Q, all red Bajaj Boxers — were towed to Naggalama Police Yard along with the minibus for inspection.

Police Blame Reckless Riding

SSP Patrick Onyango, spokesperson for the Kampala Metropolitan Police, attributed the accident to reckless riding and speeding.

“Preliminary findings point to reckless behavior on the road. We appeal to motorists and cyclists, especially during campaign activities, to prioritize road safety,” Onyango said.

Police have opened investigations and urged all road users to exercise extra caution as political campaigns intensify ahead of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.

Campaign Trail Turns Risky

The crash comes as Bobi Wine escalates his nationwide tours to consolidate support, particularly in central Uganda — a region that has historically been a battleground between his NUP movement and the ruling NRM party.

Convoy accidents have become a recurring concern in Uganda’s heated political season, with large crowds, motorcycles, and campaign vehicles often overwhelming narrow rural roads.

✨ Bottom Line: Saturday’s crash highlights the dangers of high-energy campaign trails in Uganda, where enthusiasm sometimes collides — literally — with road safety. With elections just months away, authorities and campaign teams alike face mounting pressure to protect lives on the trail.
