President Yoweri Museveni has directed the release of former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among from house arrest and decided that criminal prosecution against her will not continue, according to Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Muhoozi announced the developments on Tuesday morning, saying Museveni had instructed him to release Among, who had been under house arrest for more than 100 days amid investigations into allegations surrounding corruption and wealth.
“Mzee has also instructed me to release AAA from house arrest. We shall do that as well,” Muhoozi said, referring to Among by her initials.
The announcement was followed by a second disclosure from Muhoozi concerning the criminal investigations against the former Speaker.
Asked on X whether Among would still face prosecution, Muhoozi said she would not.
“No. We shall not prosecute AAA. She made mistakes, but Mzee has decided to forgive her,” he said.
Among had stepped aside from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament as investigations continued into allegations relating to corruption, wealth declaration and the financial management of Parliament.
She was subsequently replaced by Jacob Oboth Oboth, who was elected Speaker of the 12th Parliament.
The latest directive potentially brings a significant shift in Among’s situation after months of restrictions and scrutiny over allegations linked to her tenure as Speaker and the management of Parliament.
According to Muhoozi, however, the President has now chosen forgiveness rather than prosecution.
The decision also means Among’s period under house arrest could soon come to an end, following the presidential instruction to release her.
For Among, the developments mark a dramatic change in circumstances—from months of restrictions and investigations to a presidential decision that, according to Muhoozi, will see her released and spared criminal prosecution.
