Individuals and organisations have donated food supplies to families affected by prolonged drought and food insecurity in Uganda’s Karamoja Sub-region, following an emergency relief appeal by the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC).
The appeal was launched by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, to mobilise assistance for communities in northeastern Uganda facing severe food shortages after months of drought.
The donations were received on behalf of the Mufti by the Second Deputy Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Hafiz Muhammad Bukenya.
Individuals and Organisations Respond
Among those who responded to the appeal is Ugandan filmmaker and actress Mariam Ndagire.
Canadian Muslim Muamer Dajdic also contributed to the initiative after learning about the relief campaign from UMSC Secretary for Religious Affairs, Sheikh Imran Abdunoor Ssali.
Dajdic donated 70 packages of maize flour for the affected communities.
The Uganda Forex Bureau and Money Remittance Association also joined the relief effort by delivering a consignment of essential food supplies.
The association’s chairman, Haj Masoud Obeid, presented the donation, which included:
- 200 packages of maize flour
- 100 packages of sugar
- 100 packages of cooking oil
- 100 packages of salt
- 100 bags of beans
The supplies are intended to support families facing food shortages amid the prolonged drought.
UMSC Appeals for More Support
Sheikh Bukenya thanked the individuals and organisations that responded to the humanitarian appeal, describing the donations as an expression of solidarity with vulnerable communities.
“We appreciate the generosity of individuals and organisations that have responded to this appeal. These are acts of human brotherhood, and we encourage others to emulate this example by supporting families affected by the crisis,” Bukenya said.
The UMSC said its relief initiative will continue mobilising assistance for families in Karamoja experiencing food insecurity linked to the prolonged drought.
