Ugandan musician Crim Soft is proving that an artist does not always need heavy support from traditional broadcast media to build a successful music career.

The singer revealed that his first experiences with music came through church, where he performed as an a cappella artist in the Seventh-day Adventist Church during his childhood.
“My real name is Mwesigwa Joshua Dan, and I was born and raised in Uganda. I started my music journey while I was at campus, where I met my producer, Gabla Dexta,” he shared.
While studying at university, Crim Soft began developing his songwriting skills. He started writing songs during his second year at campus but only recorded his first song after completing his studies, marking the beginning of his professional career.
Beyond music, the artist has an academic background, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and training as a Pharmacy Dispenser from Makerere University.
He also comes from a family with strong musical roots, with many relatives involved in gospel music. However, he explained that only he and one of his brothers decided to pursue secular music.
Musical Influences and Creative Direction
Like many artists, Crim Soft’s inspirations have evolved throughout his career.
The musician explained that his taste continues to change as he discovers new sounds and artists.
Currently, he admires Nigerian singer CKay and the style of music he creates.
When asked about artists he appreciates locally, Crim Soft mentioned Azawi as one of his favorites.
Across Africa, he said his list of inspirations continues to change depending on the music different artists are producing at the time.
For him, creativity is not about copying trends but understanding what makes an artist unique.

“Not really. I get a lot of streams on digital platforms, and my music also receives airplay on several radio stations, so it hasn’t affected me much,” he explained.

He explained that he studies what his listeners enjoy while still maintaining his own identity as an artist.
“I’ve taken time to understand my audience and give them the kind of music they enjoy. At the same time, I don’t lose myself in the process,” he said.
