Crim Soft Reveals How Digital Platforms Built His Independent Music Career
Ugandan musician Crim Soft is proving that an artist does not always need heavy support from traditional broadcast media to build a successful music career.
The independent artist has carved out his own path by focusing on digital promotion, releasing quality music, and connecting directly with listeners through streaming platforms.
Born Mwesigwa Joshua Dan, Crim Soft has grown his career outside the usual mainstream route while maintaining a strong connection with his audience.
In an exclusive conversation, the singer opened up about his childhood, musical influences, challenges as an independent artist, and how digital platforms have changed the way musicians build careers.
From Church Music to Professional Recording
Crim Soft’s musical journey started long before he entered the professional industry.
The singer revealed that his first experiences with music came through church, where he performed as an a cappella artist in the Seventh-day Adventist Church during his childhood.
“My real name is Mwesigwa Joshua Dan, and I was born and raised in Uganda. I started my music journey while I was at campus, where I met my producer, Gabla Dexta,” he shared.
While studying at university, Crim Soft began developing his songwriting skills. He started writing songs during his second year at campus but only recorded his first song after completing his studies, marking the beginning of his professional career.
Beyond music, the artist has an academic background, holding a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and training as a Pharmacy Dispenser from Makerere University.
He also comes from a family with strong musical roots, with many relatives involved in gospel music. However, he explained that only he and one of his brothers decided to pursue secular music.
Musical Influences and Creative Direction
Like many artists, Crim Soft’s inspirations have evolved throughout his career.
The musician explained that his taste continues to change as he discovers new sounds and artists.
Currently, he admires Nigerian singer CKay and the style of music he creates.
When asked about artists he appreciates locally, Crim Soft mentioned Azawi as one of his favorites.
Across Africa, he said his list of inspirations continues to change depending on the music different artists are producing at the time.
For him, creativity is not about copying trends but understanding what makes an artist unique.

Building a Career Without Heavy TV and Radio Exposure
Unlike many musicians who depend heavily on television and radio promotion, Crim Soft has built his career through digital platforms.
However, he does not view the lack of mainstream media dominance as a major setback.
“Not really. I get a lot of streams on digital platforms, and my music also receives airplay on several radio stations, so it hasn’t affected me much,” he explained.
The artist believes the modern music industry has created new opportunities where musicians can reach audiences directly without relying entirely on traditional gatekeepers.
Streaming platforms have allowed independent artists to connect with listeners beyond geographical boundaries.
The Digital Strategy Behind His Growth
For Crim Soft, success on digital platforms starts with having strong music.
He explained that his approach involves focusing on digital promotion and working with trusted music distributors to make sure his songs reach the right listeners.
Streaming platforms such as Spotify and Apple Music often use algorithms that recommend songs based on listener behavior, making audience connection a key part of growth.
According to Crim Soft, the foundation remains simple: create music people genuinely enjoy.
“The key is producing good music. Quality music naturally attracts listeners and keeps them coming back,” he said.
Staying Authentic While Understanding Fans
Without the pressure of constant mainstream media expectations, Crim Soft believes he has more freedom to understand his audience and shape his sound.
He explained that he studies what his listeners enjoy while still maintaining his own identity as an artist.
“I’ve taken time to understand my audience and give them the kind of music they enjoy. At the same time, I don’t lose myself in the process,” he said.
The balance between audience expectations and personal creativity remains important to him.
Rather than chasing every trend, Crim Soft focuses on creating music that represents who he is.
Funding Music Independently
Building a music career independently comes with financial challenges, but Crim Soft has developed ways to support his projects.
He revealed that he finances his music through income from live performances and streaming revenue.
Outside music, the artist also runs businesses in Kampala that help support his creative journey.
This approach has allowed him to continue investing in his career without depending entirely on outside funding.
From Kampala to the Global Digital Stage
Crim Soft believes geography and culture influence how artists reach international audiences, but he sees uniqueness as the most important factor.
According to him, language can sometimes affect global reach, but the style and quality of music matter even more.
His advice to upcoming artists is to understand their strengths rather than simply following popular trends.
The artist believes originality remains one of the biggest advantages in a competitive music industry.
The Future of Independent Music
Looking back at his journey, Crim Soft believes building a career outside traditional broadcast systems has made him more resilient.
He says the experience has helped him develop a stronger online community and a more direct relationship with listeners.
For independent musicians, digital platforms have changed the rules — giving artists new ways to grow, connect, and create opportunities.
Crim Soft’s journey reflects a growing shift in Uganda’s music scene, where talent, consistency, and digital strategy are becoming powerful tools for success.
