Harjit Kaur, a 73-year-old grandmother and long-time resident of California, was deported to India on 22 September after living in the United States for over three decades. Her arrest by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on 8 September shocked the Sikh community and sparked widespread outrage.

Kaur originally moved to the US in 1991 with her two young sons, fleeing political turmoil in Punjab. During her time in California, she lived and worked legally while filing multiple unsuccessful asylum claims. Despite having no criminal record, her detention and subsequent deportation have been described as inhumane by her lawyer, Deepak Ahluwalia.

The Southport Police Department has arrested Nigel Edge in connection with the shooting, according to court documents obtained by TMZ. Edge faces:

  • Three counts of first-degree murder
  • Five counts of attempted first-degree murder
  • Five counts of assault with a deadly weapon

A bond has not yet been set, and Edge is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

The funding request was delivered on Friday by Finance Minister Matia Kasaija, acting on behalf of Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr. Monica Musenero, during the plant’s official commissioning ceremony.

“While touring the facility, my colleague in charge of Science, Technology and Innovation asked me to tell Your Excellency that the plant requires another $143 million for expansion. I believe you now owe these people at Kiira Motors,” Minister Kasaija told President Museveni.
