The family of legendary Ugandan actor and playwright Alex Mukulu has revealed that the veteran creative died following complications related to his liver as preparations for his send-off get underway.
Mukulu, who was one of Uganda’s most respected theatre figures, died on August 15, 2026, leaving the country’s entertainment and theatre communities mourning the loss of a major creative force.
According to reports, Mukulu had been battling illnesses related to liver complications before his death. At the time of his passing, he was receiving treatment at Kiruddu Hospital.
The revelation about his health comes as his family, colleagues and government officials begin discussions over how the veteran dramatist will be laid to rest.

Abbey Mukiibi revealed that discussions were underway between the family and the government to give Mukulu an official send-off, citing his contribution to Uganda as a national creative figure.
“We are in discussion with the family alongside the government because Alex was a national asset who deserves an official send-off,” Mukiibi said.
Mukulu’s death has prompted an outpouring of tributes across Uganda’s creative industry, with many remembering him for his work as an actor, playwright, director and educationist.
His career included several notable theatrical works, among them 30 Years of Bananas, Springs of Tears, The People’s President, Excuse Me Mzungu and Gwanga Mujje. His work frequently explored Uganda’s history, society and political experiences.
A public mourning ceremony is reportedly planned for Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the National Theatre, giving colleagues, artists and members of the public an opportunity to pay tribute to the late theatre icon.

The date for his burial, however, has not yet been communicated.
As Uganda prepares to say goodbye, the focus now turns to celebrating the body of work Mukulu leaves behind and the generations of artists influenced by his contribution to the country’s theatre industry.
